New York State has a multi-billion-dollar "Rainy Day Fund" that the Governor can use to fund SNAP.
NY families who rely on SNAP and HEAP benefits are facing uncertainty as the federal government shutdown continues. North Country Assemblyman Matt Simpson said the governor could take that uncertainty away by employing the states multi-billion-dollar Rainy Day fund. Simpson said legislators from both chambers and across both parties have called on Governor Hochul to step in and provide stability. He said, “NY has the resources to ensure no one goes hungry or cold while Washington remains gridlocked.” Simpson explained it’s up to the Governor to temporarily tap the reserves to maintain SNAP and HEAP benefits.
