The North Country leads the state in a decline of young adult population growth the Comptroller says.
The North Country is seeing the biggest decline in young adult population growth according to a report from the Comptroller’s office. The report shows a negative growth rate of 8.5% in the region. Overall, NY is experiencing a negative growth rate of about 2% among people born between 1996 and 2013. Only three regions in the state show an increase in the growth rate of young adults; they are the Capital region, Hudson valley and Long Island. State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said young adults are dealing with mounting obstacles in NY. Specifically, he said they face fewer entry-level jobs, rising unemployment and increasing housing costs making it difficult to live independently and build a future in NY.
