The state Consumer Protection Division has sent out an alert regarding package theft during the holidays.
The New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection is warning consumers about package theft this holiday season. Theft by “Porch Pirates” is more prevalent during the holidays as the volume of packages delivered increases significantly. According to the National Retail Federation, during the five-day holiday weekend from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday, online shopping increased nine percent (9%) compared to last year. The U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General reports that at least 58 million packages were stolen nationwide in 2024, leading to approximately $16 billion in financial loss.
