The Essex County Health Department reports another case of rabies has been confirmed.
A bat captured in a Westport home tested positive for rabies according to the Essex County Health Department. Director of Health Planning and Promotion, Jessica Darney Buehler, said “Based on the risk bats pose and the circumstances of this incident, one person was advised to seek medical care.” Director of Public Health, Linda Beers, emphasized that it’s important to capture any bat found in a home so it can be tested. So far this year, rabies cases have been confirmed in four other animals in Essex County. Meanwhile the Clinton County Health Department reports that bats have been visiting Clinton County homes in increasing numbers over the last few weeks. The health department says if a bat is discovered in a home, it should be tested. Once you've captured it, call the health department at 565-4870 to learn your next steps.
