A warning about romance scams has been issued by the State’s Division of Consumer Protection. Romance scams occur when a criminal uses a fake identity to feign romantic interest and manipulate or steal from a victim. According to the Federal Trade Commission, last year New Yorkers reported an estimated $50 million in losses from romance scams. Some tips to avoid these scams include scheduling a live video-chat early in the relationship, researching anyone with whom you have an interest in and sharing your online interactions with a friend or relative. The Consumer Protection Division says If someone you haven’t met in person asks you for money, assume it is a scam.
