The number of stolen vehicles in NY State has increased in recent years reports the DMV.
Between January 1 and June 30 of this year, the DMV recovered 188 vehicles with a total value of almost $5.6 million. During that same time last year, the department recovered 120 vehicles totaling about $3.5 million. A couple of signs that may suggest a car was stolen include odometer discrepancies and a vehicle with a NY title that has out of state inspections stickers. The DMV also suggests checking the VIN before buying a used car. The National Insurance Crime Bureau website offers a free VIN check service on their website.
