Hundreds of New York state residents lose their lives due to skin cancer each year according to DOH.
Two of the most common types of skin cancer are basal and melanoma. Melanoma is the most dangerous. The State Department of Health reports that more than 4,400 residents are diagnosed with melanoma annually, and it claims over 350 lives each year. Skin cancer is caused by UV rays. In NY It is against the law for anyone under 18 to use UV producing equipment at indoor tanning facilities. That’s because, according to the health department, Indoor tanning devices can produce UV radiation levels 15 times greater than sunlight. The Health Department offers tips on their website regarding the use of tanning facilities.
