An assessment shows NY's growing power demand is a concern for a group that monitors grid health.
The organization that monitors the state’s power grid issued its annual Winter Assessment and it suggested the state should have adequate capacity to meet this years demand. However, Aaron Markham, Vice President of Operations for New York Independent System Operator’s said, “in general, winter reliability of the grid is a growing concern, especially during extended cold snaps and other extreme weather.” The Winter Assessment found that available power resources should meet a forecasted peak demand of just over 24,000 megawatts. That’s 500 megawatts more than last winter’s peak as demand continues to grow in New York State.
