For Southeast Missouri farmer Flaire Ferrell, a TikTok video of his baby camel Faye's cheerful "hey" greeting became an unexpected internet sensation. Ferrell, who has owned nearly 60 camels over the past 11 years, explained that such vocalizations are common in young camels, whose higher-pitched voices often sound surprisingly human-like. Another of Ferrell's camels, named Georgia, has even learned to say "hi" on command. While the viral magic of Faye's greeting may seem uncommon, Ferrell insists it's just another day on his farm, which is home to 21 camels as well as emus, kangaroos, and other livestock. Raising camels comes with its challenges, from parasite control to finding knowledgeable veterinarians. But for Ferrell, the rewards far outweigh the difficulties. "If I can make an animal's life happy, I can make someone else's life happy with that animal, and then lastly, I can benefit financially from it," he explains. (People)
