Ridgewood, NJ Enacts Bird Feeder Restrictions Amid Statewide Debate

Ridgewood, New Jersey, has implemented new regulations on wildlife feeding, making it the first municipality in the state to restrict bird feeders on private property. The Ridgewood Village Council approved an ordinance on April 9 that extends the existing ban on wildlife feeding in public areas to include private land. The measure prohibits intentional and accidental feeding of wildlife, with specific conditions for bird feeders. Bird feeders must now be placed at least six feet above the ground, equipped with seed-catching devices, and limited to three per property. Ground feeding is entirely prohibited to reduce encounters with animals like bears, deer, rodents, and disease-carrying birds.
The local ordinance has faced backlash, with concerns raised over property rights and impacts on bird-watching enthusiasts statewide. While Ridgewood's law is in effect, questions remain about enforcement. (Shorenewsnetwork)
