The iconic Rosebud sled from Orson Welles' 1941 film Citizen Kane was recently auctioned for $14.75 million, marking it as the second-most expensive piece of movie memorabilia ever sold. The sled, one of only three known to still exist, was in the possession of Gremlins director Joe Dante since he discovered it at the old RKO Pictures studio lot in 1984. Dante decided to put the sled up for sale through Heritage Auctions, where it fetched the impressive sum of $14.75 million. This sale places the sled as the second-highest ever paid for a piece of movie memorabilia, following the $32.5 million auction of the ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz in 2024. Dante expressed his satisfaction in seeing Rosebud find a new home, emphasizing the enduring power of storytelling. (Upi)
