Cardinal Robert Prevost has been named the first American-born Pope in the history of the Catholic church. The 69-year-old hails from Chicago, and has spent most of his career as missionary in Peru. Adopting the name Pope Leo XIV, he succeeds Pope Francis. Little-known globally, Prevost only became a cardinal in 2023 and headed the Vatican office that selects bishops. (AP)


Bill Gates announced that the Gates Foundation will ramp up spending to $200 billion over the next 20 years and conclude operations by 2045.
