Assemblyman Michael Cashman is criticizing New York’s plan to build a 3,000-bed correctional facility at a projected cost of nearly one billion dollars. Cashman says the state cannot adequately staff its current prisons and should consider reopening closed or standby facilities instead. He says National Guard members remain at some prisons because of correction officer shortages. Cashman is calling on the governor to direct more funding toward staffing, safety measures and improved working conditions.
