AI Is Quietly Influencing Human Speech Patterns

Sunday, September 14, 2025 at 8:01 PM

Florida State University research shows artificial intelligence is changing how people speak in everyday conversations. The study, published on arXiv and led by computational linguist Tom Juzek, examined over 22 million words from tech and science podcasts recorded before and after ChatGPT's launch. Results show increased use of words commonly generated by large language models, including "delve," "boast," "surpass," and "garner," while their synonyms haven't grown similarly. Researchers link this trend to implicit learning and priming, where repeated exposure causes unconscious language adoption. A previous study found similar patterns in German YouTube channels. Experts worry AI could reduce regional slang and linguistic diversity, potentially diminishing creativity. Juzek warns "the deeper concern is that the very same mechanism could shape not just vocabulary but also beliefs and values." (Story URL)
