Gun-related suicides in the U.S. reached a record high for the third consecutive year in 2023, according to a report from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The report revealed that about 27,300 gun-related deaths in 2023 were suicides, accounting for 58% of all gun deaths. This equated to an American using a gun to end their life every 19 minutes. While firearm homicides decreased, the number of gun-related suicides continued to rise. The report highlighted that strategies to limit access to guns for those at high risk of suicide could save lives, including implementing policies to prevent children's access to guns and restricting quick gun purchases.
