An effort to reduce bird collisions into State-Owned and Managed building is underway in New York State.
The Office of General Services began the ‘Lights Out’ initiative last week. The program directs building managers to switch off non-essential outdoor lighting between 11 pm and dawn during the spring bird migration going on now through May 31st and again during the fall migration. State agencies are also asked to turn off non-essential indoor lighting. According to OGS, in addition to benefiting birds ‘Lights Out’ also provides cost-savings to the state.
