Legislation was signed on Friday that allows for medical aid in dying in New York State starting in August.
Governor Hochul signed legislation on Friday that will allow medical aid in dying to be available to terminally ill New Yorkers with less than six months to live. The bill includes what the governor’s office calls “guardrails” intended to ensure terminally ill New Yorkers have the choice to die on their own terms. Some of the specific mandates include: A waiting period of five days between when a prescription is written and filled, an oral request by the patient for medical aid in dying must be recorded by video or audio, and a mental health evaluation must be performed on the patient. Reportedly, the law is scheduled to take effect in August.
