Schumer Warns Against Proposed Cuts to Social Security

Thursday, March 27, 2025 at 2:32 AM

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer strongly criticizes proposed cuts to the federal Social Security system, warning that they will severely impact millions of New Yorkers, including 50,000 in the North Country.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer has raised alarm over proposed cuts to the Social Security system that could devastate more than 4 million New Yorkers, including 50,000 in the North Country who rely on around $80 million in benefits annually. Schumer condemned the cuts, which he attributed to President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under Elon Musk's leadership, claiming they would cause delays and hardships for beneficiaries, particularly those with disabilities. The cuts include massive layoffs, regional office closures, and service disruptions such as delays in getting benefits and long phone wait times, which have already caused difficulties for seniors and disabled individuals. Schumer blasted Musk's characterization of Social Security as a "Ponzi Scheme," calling it outrageous and emphasizing that people paid into the system throughout their careers. Schumer urged New Yorkers to contact their congressional representatives, especially Republicans, to oppose these cuts and protect the vital Social Security program.  via The Press Republican
