The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has temporarily closed Big Otter Lake Road to motorized traffic in the Independence River Wild Forest in Lewis County. Officials say the road was damaged by a spring washout. The roadway remains open for hikers and other non-motorized use, although visitors are being urged to use caution around damaged areas. DEC is advising visitors to use the Pine Lake Trailhead parking area while repairs are pending.
