The Essex County Fair is working to make its historic grandstand wheelchair accessible before the 177th fair opens July 29 in Westport. Construction is underway on the Grandstand Accessibility Improvement Project, funded in part by a state grant and Essex County. The Cloudsplitter Foundation has also offered a $5,000 challenge grant, but the fair must raise $5,000 in community donations by opening day. Organizers say the project will preserve a landmark while making fair traditions accessible to more visitors.
