Montreal Man Identified in Fatal Lake Champlain Drowning

Police have identified the man who drowned in Lake Champlain last week as 86 year old George Mitchell of Montreal. Mitchell was found July 14 along the western shore of North Hero. Lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful. The Grand Isle County Sheriff’s Department says the medical examiner determined Mitchell died by accidental drowning.

Homelessness Falls Statewide but Rises Across Many Regions

New York’s homeless population fell nearly 8% between January 2024 and January 2025, according to State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. The decline was driven mainly by New York City, while homelessness increased in 17 of the state’s 25 reporting regions. Children account for nearly one-third of the state’s homeless population.
