The Department of Taxation encourages taxpayers to know their rights regarding a tax preparer.
NY State’s Consumer Bill of Rights Regarding Tax Preparers establishes standards to help protect the public. In NY, registered tax return preparers must post their registration certificate and price list. They must also allow filers to review the completed return and advise up front if they’ll be a representative should the return be audited. If a tax preparer does not comply, consumers can file a complaint with the Tax Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility.
