A new memorial honoring 44 Revolutionary War patriots has been dedicated at Lake George Battlefield State Park. Officials say the remains are believed to be Continental Army soldiers and camp followers who died from smallpox in 1776 while being treated at Fort George’s military hospital. The remains were discovered in unmarked graves on Courtland Street in 2019 and were formally reinterred during a ceremony ahead of Memorial Day weekend and America’s upcoming 250th anniversary celebration. The new memorial includes interpretive displays and a plaza honoring the sacrifices made during the Revolutionary War.
